To Replace or Not To Replace<\/strong><\/h2>\n

More often than not, your windshield can be repaired rather than replaced. If you can get it repaired, it’s recommended as repairs are less expensive and take less time. But sometimes your windshield will be damaged beyond repair, and you\u2019re just going to have to bring out the big bucks and pay for a replacement. But how do you know if you need to replace or not?<\/p>\n

An auto glass repair shop technician will be the best person to answer this for you. But generally if you have a crack that is longer than one foot, or a chip larger than two inches than your windshield is beyond saving.<\/p>\n

Other damage that cannot be repaired include:<\/p>\n

  • Damage that is on both layers of the glass<\/li>\n
  • Multiple cracks<\/li>\n
  • Damage over the driver\u2019s viewing area<\/li>\n
  • Cracks and chips along the edge of the windshield<\/li>\n
  • Damage on the inside of the windshield<\/li>\n
  • Cracks that are over 18 inches long<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Types of Cracks and Chips:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The size and type of the crack or chip also has an impact on whether or not you have to replace your windshield.<\/p>\n

    Repairable:<\/b><\/p>\n

    • Star break (short cracks coming out from a central point resembling a star)<\/li>\n
    • Crack<\/li>\n
    • Pit (small piece of the glass has come off)<\/li>\n
    • Bullseye (circular chip)<\/li>\n
    • Half moon (similar to bullseye, but damage is not a full circle)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Not repairable:<\/b><\/p>\n

      • Spider webs (multiple cracks spreading out from a central point)<\/li>\n
      • Large crack or chips<\/li>\n

        How to Avoid a Replacement<\/strong><\/h3>\n

        Sometimes things that are completely out of your control happen, aka accidents, and you still end up paying for it. When this happens, unfortunately, there\u2019s not much you can do other than get good insurance.
