Windshield Wiper Problems
Smearing in one direction: Water smearing on your windshield can be common in cold weather. The reason for this could be either your wipers are the wrong size or they’re getting old and are hardening. If you’re finding it difficult to see through the smear while driving, it’s best to get new windshield wipers.
Smearing in two directions: If you’re finding that your windshield wipers are smearing in two directions, you may have one or more of the following complications:
1. Poor quality windshield wiper fluid
2. Worn out blades
3. Dirty windshield and wipers.
Before replacing your blades, change your wiper fluid and clean both your windshield and it’s wipers. Use a cloth with warm, soapy water to wipe the wiper blades off. Rubbing alcohol on the edge of the blades can also reduce smudging and smearing on your windshield.
Chattering: If your windshield wipers are making odd chattering noises, water might not be wiped away well enough. The cause of this is often a build up of a residue of grease or oil. Be sure to scrub the blades and wipers to clean off any debris.
If you’ve cleaned your wipers and the sound still isn’t going away, the source of the sound might be a bent wiper arm. You can inspect if this is the problem by bringing the blade up mid-wipe. The blades should be fully touching the windshield. If not, you can use a pair of pliers to carefully bend the wipers back in place until they are sitting parallel to the windshield.
The chattering noise can also come from a frozen windshield or wipers. Let the car warm up with the defroster to see if the sound is still present.
Water Beads: Lots of windshield treatments to keep a clear view cause water droplets to bead and run off the glass. However, you may find that the water isn’t being wiped away and will stick to your windshield. Your windshield may have built up residue or dirt that doesn’t let the water wipe away. Try giving your windshield a thorough scrubbing with a strong glass cleaner. Be sure not to use any products that could scratch or damage your windshield.
